Skill Builder FAQ

What is a Claude skill?

A Claude skill (agent skill) is a folder with a SKILL.md file at its root. The SKILL.md carries a name and description in YAML frontmatter plus markdown instructions the agent reads when the skill is relevant. Skills work across Claude Code, Claude apps, Cursor, Codex, Gemini CLI and other agents that follow the Agent Skills standard.

Is this skill builder free?

Yes — completely free, no account needed. You get the full SKILL.md file to copy, download and edit. SkillzBench's directory, MCP connector and benchmarks are free too.

Is a Claude skill just a prompt?

No. A prompt is one message; a skill is a reusable instruction package the agent discovers from its description and loads on demand. Skills can bundle scripts and reference files alongside SKILL.md, and they travel with your repo or team.

Can I use the generated skill with Cursor, Codex or Gemini CLI?

Yes. The SKILL.md format is an open standard. Drop the generated folder into your agent's skills directory (for example .claude/skills/, .codex/skills/ or .gemini/skills/) and the agent picks it up.

What makes a good skill?

The two fields that decide everything are name and description — that is what an agent matches against when deciding to load your skill. The description should say, in third person, what it does and when to use it. The body should be procedural, addressed to the agent, and lean: push detail into references/ and code into scripts/ so you only pay context for what you use. Our validator checks all of this, and the methodology page explains how we score finished skills.
